Portsmouth Camp

Tucked behind the old Friends Meeting House (built in 1699) there is an enclave of seemingly empty antique white houses and facility buildings, erected in the early 1800s. Only accessible by a dirt road, partly masked by tall maples and oaks, they are at once seductive and terrifying. Finally mustering the courage to enter and explore, I met some friendly people that explained that this camp is used for religious purposes one week out the year. And we’ll leave it at that.
